Tracer freehand X-Y mapping

Tracer freehand X-Y mapping

Tracer is a mobile ultrasonic scanning system that provides accurate X–Y positioning for C-scan data without being tied to the framework. Ideal for working with linear array probes, it provides fast, flexible and portable inspection, particularly suitable for corrosion mapping, composite inspection and delamination inspection.

Key features and benefits

  • Freehand scanning with encoder data: Provides precise coordinates in the X and Y axes, without the need for attachment to a rigid frame.

  • Quick and easy start: Easy setup and calibration in five simple steps – perfect for field work.

  • Extremely portable: Lightweight solution with two wire encoders, various mounting brackets and weight clamp – easy to carry and handle.

  • Universal compatibility: Works with any instrument that accepts X–Y encoder input.

  • Cost-effective: Low-cost alternative for C-scan mapping without bulky mechanical scanners.

Technical specifications

  • Scanner resolution: 5 steps per millimeter

  • Max. scanning area: Approximately 2 × 2 meters

  • Max. scanning speed: Up to 500 mm/s in all directions

  • Probe specification: Can hold linear probes up to 55mm wide

  • Mounting distance: Suitable for distances from 0.2 to 2 meters between encoders

  • Mounting methods: Magnetic, vacuum cup, or clamp mounting – usable in all orientations

Areas of application

  • Corrosion mapping – quick overview of material degradation in tanks and structures

  • Composite and delamination inspection – ideal for detailed C-scan examinations

  • Field-adapted inspection – especially useful in tight or irregular areas where frame scanning is impractical
